How to Prepare for a Job Interview If You are Neurodivergent

Show off your skills!

Job interviews can be daunting for anyone, but with the right support, mindset, and preparation, people of all abilities can shine. At Cahoots, we know that every individual has something valuable to contribute. This guide is here to help you step into interviews with confidence and clarity and remind you: you already have what it takes.

Know Your Strengths and Own Them

You have unique abilities, talents, and life experiences. Maybe you’re a great listener, a loyal team member, or someone who brings calm and positivity to any space. Before the interview, take time to think about:

  • What tasks you enjoy
  • What support helps you do your best
  • What others appreciate about working with you

You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to show the interviewer who you really are.

Prepare in Advance

Feeling ready makes a big difference. Try these prep steps:

  • Practice common questions like “Why do you want this job?” or “Tell us about yourself”
  • Ask someone you trust to do a practice interview with you
  • Write down key points you want to remember and bring them with you
  • Take time to research the company or organisation. Knowing what they do and what they value can help you feel more confident and show you’re genuinely interested.

At Cahoots, we often help participants rehearse conversations and practice real-life skills. You don’t have to prepare alone, community support is here for you.

Ask for Accommodations

You have the right to ask for what helps you succeed. Before your interview, it’s okay to request:

  • Extra time to answer questions
  • A quiet space with fewer distractions
  • Support from a job coach or support person

The best employers value inclusion and will be open to helping you feel comfortable.

Remember, It’s a Two-Way Conversation

You’re not just there to be interviewed, you’re also learning if the job and workplace are right for you. You can ask questions like:

  • What support do you offer for employees with disability?
  • What does a typical day look like here?
  • How do you help your staff grow and learn?
  • What are the expectations in the first few weeks of the job?
  • What is the salary or pay rate for this role?

Interviews aren’t just about getting the job; they’re about finding a place where you belong. These questions are common, important, and show that you’re thinking seriously about the opportunity.

Celebrate Every Step, Not Just the Outcome

Whether you get the job or not, showing up for an interview is a big win. You learned something, tried something new, and practiced courage. Be proud of that.

At Cahoots, we support young people with disability to build independence and confidence, from personal development programs to social events and employment readiness. We believe in every individual’s potential and we see success in every effort.

If you’re an adult living with a disability and looking to build confidence, independence, and community, Cahoots offers a range of tailored services just for you. From social programs and skill-building workshops to overnight and day supports, our adult services are designed to help you reach your goals in a safe, inclusive environment. Help us, help others

No matter how small, your contribution goes towards helping Cahoots lower the costs for families using our services. Whilst we are NDIS funded, there is often a shortfall between the funding and the cost of our activities, so your donations mean families can still send their loved ones to our camps and programs.

For many, Cahoots is a life changing experience for both the participants who grow, learn and enjoy themselves, but it also provides respite to parents and families from the demands of full time care. Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated.
